Veiltail is always dominate. Thats the wild trait.

Everything is going to depend on the genetics behind the two fish - remember the genotype (genes we don't 'see') and the phenotype (what we actually 'see'). Unfortunately we cannot always look at features and know the genotype. Crossing a VT and say a SD, you could get rounder finnage. If what you are trying to achieve is a SD, starting with such an outcross, you would have to work for several generations to achieve your goal.

Yeah as in "wild types" there are many more than just the ones we own, There are over 50 species of bettas and to determine the Dominant gene might be tough. Lost of inbreeding to get the perfect betta has been done especially in thai and SE asia. Its also done so they can breed the perfect "fighter" when entered in competition
