    Default Hello out there!

I am new to this list, but I am having a lot of fun with my Bettas.

My old glass 10-gallon tank had two zebras that shredded my poor Betta's tail so I bought him a 5 gallon tank and tried tetras and an otto. His tail grew back and he is beautiful again. The two zebras now rule a 12 gallon tank with tetras, corys, shrimp and frogs--no Betta. I also have a three gallon with a Betta, minnows, shrimp, an otto cat and frogs. The minnows only bother each other.

All of my tanks are Eclipse now as they are light, all-inclusive and do not leak.

Hi and welcome to BFF! Its great to hear ya nursed your Betta back to top form. Sounds like you got yourself a pretty good aquatic scene going there. I have 6 tanks going myself. A 37gal and two 5 gal Eclipse tanks, two 10gal and one 20gal and everyone of them has Bettas in them. I have 8 day old Betta fry in one of the 10gal. Its my first spawn. Both mom & dad are Crowntails and did an awesome job for their first time. I also have 3 species of tetras,4 corys,1 otto, 2 golden algae eaters, and 4 galaxy rasboras. As for my Bettas their is 3 male HM's, steel blue, platinum white and red. 2 VT's males 1 is red and the other is cambodian, and I have 1 male SD who is a mixture of turquoise and copper, and my new daddy who is a cambodian CT. Then there is 5 females. 2 HM's platinum white and the other red. 2 VT's one is blue the other is chocolate and the 5th one is my multi-color CT who just became a mom. I think Im good for a while...lol Anyway we have a great group. Very knowledgable so do hesitate to ask questions. Enjoy your week-end

Sounds like a nice setup you have going. Keep up the good work and pat yourself on the back for a job well done in healing those 'shredded fins'.

My only question is what to do about my new 3-gallon Eclipse's biowheel stopping dead. If I give it a push it starts up, but the damage is done as the wheel has completely stopped by now. I made sure the pad filter is top stopping it by being in the way. Any ideas?

    Congratulations on your babies!

A golden algae eater is the one fish I returned to the fish store -- for aggression! It too two of us and removing all of the stuff from the tank to catch him, but it was worth it. I love the ottos and the corys, so peaceful in contrast!

yeah i had cories but i found our that golden apple snails do such a better job in cleaning the tank, so i gave up my cories to purchase a couple of snails. as for the biowheel, there might be something wrong with it, I do understand that the waterwheels hung just above the filter return outlet, and they continually turn. As they rotate, beneficial aerobic bacteria grow in vast numbers, and, according to the company. It is possible you might have a defective wheel. I don't personaly have this type of tank, but from what i know it should be a continuous turn. I can say a Biowheel will cycle your tank almost over night if you swap out the brand new one with a wheel on a cycled existing tank, if you have it. If not you might want to return or purchase that peice from the company.
Hope this helps, like i said before feel free to ask any other questions you have

Hi, I have 5 of these tanks because they are so reliable, but like all things they do break down from time to time. Now for your Bio-Wheel it sounds like the bearings are going out. Water and constant motion tends to do this to metal, so I would like you to inspect the bearings and axle for dirt. Also do you have snails in the tank by any chance? This happened to me the other day while changing the filter. I noticed the wheel was not moving and I gave it a few nudges and it would not move so I inspected the bearings and axle for dirt and there was nahda. Then something moving where the wheel belongs and low and behold it was a snail just big enough to stop the wheel. So mine was a pretty easy fix...darn snails...lol So back to the inspection. If everything looks clean chances are the bearings have checked-out. Good news is here is the part# PR3121 (Bio-Wheel Bearings) and you can order at [Registered users only can see links. ] or call them at 800 322-1266 (M-F 8am-5pm) Pacific Time. There ya go!
