| i just bought a new viel male he is relatively small but has nice colour and is very healthy. i put him in my 2.5 gl tank about 5 hrs ago and he has a huge bubble nest already. in the tank there is a divider and my female is in there, he keeps showing of to her by flaring up and then swimming to the net. i dont know wether my female is ready though she had the white spot on her belly. but she only has her colour starting to show on her fins and body. Is she to young. and how much longer shold i wait before i take the divider in the middle out. He is abit bigger than my female, and my femal has lines that go up and down on her body. ARE THEY READY. |

| at the momment there not in a tank with a heater and filter but have a heater lamp over the tank... should i move then to my 10 Gl and remove my other male and feamle betta out of it or leave them as they are... the water is very clean. |

| yeah i would move them. a 10gallon tank is definitly a great tank to breed in. Gives the male enough room to roam and dominate and gives enough room for 50-150 eggs (which is normal eggs laying). remove the bettas NOT WITH THE NET, remove and transfer with a cup or deep soup spoon. Now if they don't get along right away and seem distracted, this is normal, putting them in a new enviroment will distract them from making a nest right away and her being intrested in him. This will go on for a little while until comfortable with his/her new surrounding. When putting the female in, MAKE SURE she's in a vase, bottle, or chimney. You want them seperated still. Until the nest and her stripes are back. This is the patients testing part. Dont rush them together, you will regret it, take it from my first breeding attempt! Remember temp at 80degreesF. lower your water level to 6 inches which is natrual breeding waters, put a styrofoam cup in the corner and keep filter on. If your filter is an out of tank filter, leave the water level. Did you check out the "promoting breeding" thread? in there are tips to further promote or start promoting them. Especially introducing tannins in the water. Tannins are chemicals released from the indian almond leave or tea bags. This browns the water, which is the bettas natural habbitates color, and releases chemicals that gets your betta in that "mood" for spawning, Thus creating a nesting and spawning mood in your male and female. For further question please ask. i seem to always go on and on and then i wonder if i actually answered questiions being asked!?! lol

| Luis, question for you. How soon would you actually allow a breeding to take place on new arrivals. I have talked with several seasoned breeders who put theirs together immediately upon arrival and others who swear that they need to settle somewhat, condition a week or so with extra food supplements, then attempt breeding. I tend to go with the latter as I feel the stress of transportation/new environment, then breeding is too much too quick. It would be interesting to see numbers of the above comparing spawn size and quality of fry. Any experiences doing it both ways? |

| like i told others who are transferring bettas from smaller tanks to other tank, Time for "getting used to" is definitly in order. When placing 2 bettas that see each other everyday in a smaller tank then put in a bigger tank, do remember each other thus not exploring the surroundings as much as a new arrival. This i noticed with a couple of my pairs. But with new bettas i purchased being put in the breeding tank to try to attempt right away, i notice more of an aggressive behavior towards each other. Lots of fin tearing and lack of "getting along" with opposite genders. Now after a month of being in my care and a month in the same tank, when introducing the same pair, it was as if they knew each other and were comfortable with there surroundings to immediately start nesting and showing signs for spawning. As for the Prefeeding. I did state in another postes that prefeeding before spawning should be giving more than ususal in both feeding times. For example if your bettas consumes 4 pellets in a feeding, Give 6 while in sight of the other betta. THis will promote them to eat as much as they can before the others do to get there energy up. Females don't fast as long as the male does, Once spawning is over the female MUST be removed and FED. Her appetite revives quickly, even during matting thus resulting in eating of the eggs. This is why feeding extra before spawning is important. For the male feeding is important also. The male fasts for DAYS and doesn't think of eating after spawning is complete so making sure he eats everything is important. Feeding 3x a day in the breeding tank is sometime neccessary. The males appetite will not be revived until 3-5days after your fry have hatch, but removal on the third day after hatching is done to prevent eating the fry (this is from experience). If i didn't answer your questions betsy forgive me as i'm still a lil tired from being ill and will try to answer it correctly, just let me know if i didn't
