    Default Betta's and others...

I have a 30 gallon tank with 1 male betta fish and 2 female betta fish. For about a month now they have been in the same tank separated by a divider. I took the divider out and they seemed to be all right, the male does show some aggression but nothing serious. My first question is, are they ok like this for awhile? My second question is, if i were to put some community fish in the tank would that take away some aggression from my male and have less aggression towards the females?

In the wild they don't really fight to death as we see. this is because in tanks theres no where for the losing betta to run away too. with that being said if theres enough decor for each of your bettas to hide in it theoreticaly should now i said should and as a breeder i probably shouldn't say that, but should be ok, with the occasional ripped finnage here and there. I personally wouldn't do it, just in case. i have all my bettas in breeding pairs and divided into seperite dividers. Now for the communty question. The ideal room and gallon size for a happy bettas and fish is 2gallons per betta/fish. this will give enough room for that 1 betta/fish to swim. now u have 30 gallons. so yeah.... heres a compatability chart to start you if you go that route. [Registered users only can see links. ]
Also like i said, it should be ok and bettas being that they are aggresive in tanks and the wild, in the wild like i said, the loosing betta or "less dominant" will swim away, if u provide enough safty it might work. Now being that you have 1 male and 2 females you there a slight chance of matting. now if matting is in your thoughts.... NOW THIS IS A DIFF. BALL GAME. If this is what your trying to do, i highly recommend not doing any of what you would like to do (taking the divider out and making it a comm. tank) I breed bettas so i would know.
If theres any thoughts going thru your mind or question you'd like answered, i'm the breeder on this forum and would be happy to help. FishMomma is the health and tank specialist, Talk to ya soon!

So would having extra fish in the tank take away some of my males aggression towards the females? Also how many community fish would you recomend I put in the tank?

Yeah it might, but just when not in sight. usually less aggresions from females towards females will lessen if theres more than 3 in. 1 female out of the 3 will show dominance but nothing to serious being thats theres 2 others she has to show it to. As for the male there will always be agression towards the females, especially if he's wanting to mate (usually signs of matting is constant flaring at one specific one. and bubble nest making)
but in terms of more fish in, i think it should.
Now since you do have a big tank, i'm sure its a pain in the next to clean. Alot will say get cories to put in to help clean, but thier wastes are just as bad as the bettas, I recommend getting some water snails. Either Golden apple snails, or RamsHorn snails. These will eat basically anything in there way, even feces(yuk!) from what i seen in my community tank and my breeding/Fry tank. Also snails keep algea levels down, in that they eat it, an also from there wastes they produce microbes which if the adults see, becomes food! this mainly is for the fry, but its still something good.
What i used in the past, and just other fish weren't for me, so i took them out was tetra.
Neon tetra, they do coexist, but the problem with them is they travel in schools and are more active when in one. Also there size all in all are small, and harrassment from the bettas may be to much for them. So i purchased medium sizes tetras, and large. Large size tetras and mediums you'll hear that thier nippers, they may be towards other fish, but bettas they are not. Bettas, with there nice colors intemidate tetra by thw flaring of their fins!
Chichlids are out, some say they can, but like i said i love bettas, and chichlids are aggresive fish. Personally as a breeder and someone who cares about them, like me and you, i wouldn't.
    Guppies are a no also.
    Try Mollies,
Cories/Difftypes, but not just the sole purpose of cleaning because they don't do a good job by themselves.
Swordtails, even tho i recommend not BIG FINNAGE FISH, because of the sole purpose of flaring purposes, the bettas might take offense to large fin, AND COLORFUL fined fish!
    Platies
    Rainbowfish
    Rasbora
Loaches -some say you can, some say you can't.
    Danios
Dwarf gourmies-Now make sure their true dwarf, look up there apperence before going to the pet store to purchase, some stores pass them off as them, FishMomma Pointed this out on this forum. She's the health and tank expert on this forum as for i'm the breeder on this forum.
These are the few i can think of on the top of my head. if you want you can actually look in youtube at some bettas and there tank mates, and see for yourself how they interact. Even though, Bettas have there own personality and one betta can simply not like another fish, just because they don't. It happens with these little stubborn guys lol. Also i found this for you that i thought you might find intresting. EVEN THO ITS A NICE VID AND SHOWS YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, DON'T FULLY LISTEN WHAT SHE'S SAYING, SOME OF THE FACTS SHE GIVES IS FALSE!!!! [Registered users only can see links. ] she's not to smart and thinks she's correct. MY name on youtube is gsxrlu. and the problem with her tank set up is that its a small tank. She claims they don't fight, that BS. they do maybe when she's not around but i'm sure she's not watching the tank 24/7. and keeping them in a small tank is ignorant. Plus you'll also notice her female i'm sure released her eggs with out the embrace of a male, because of all the males in there due to MASSIVE STRESS! like i said don't listen to her, even tho the accent is nice, the retart who has the accent is well retarted lol, just mute the video and it just proves that females can live together, with ONE males and further check out more vides for other tankmates. hope this all helps!

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about specific tank mates for Bettas! Let me know! Sounds like you've got a great tank for every one but do use caution with having the male and females together when not breeding. This will only lead to eventual trouble!

Let me know if you have any questions on the tank buddies!

Well, haha thanks for all your help guys, and i'm stuck between taking the females out or not. They do seem stressed and whenever my male sees them he just flares and chases them so i'm leaning towards taking them out. I am still going to add some community fish, cardinal tetras were looking really cool. It probably isnt a good idea to add a third or fourth female to my two already? Or if i was to move them to my other tank, which is at least 30 gallons, would that work? Again thanks for all your helps guys, I really appreciate it!
