I think when it teared its fins, it created fin rot. Sorry for the loss

dropping it also into the drain could of ripped his fins and then caught some bacteria from the sink. Very Possible! If you purchase a gravel vaccume tube you wont have to stress out your betta and take him out! this will reduce that happening and him having contact with outsides bacteria.

So sorry to hear about your little fella. While a true case of fin/tail rot is usually the result of dirty water, yours sounds like a case of injury with the onset of a bacterial infection causing the tail rot. Fin rot is caused by a bacteria and will often occur after an injury to a tail or fin. Here are a few things you can do to help this from happening again. If your Betta's fins get torn or injured, add 1/2 TEASPOON of AQUARIUM SALT (not table salt since it has iodine) per GALLON of water. The salt will help your fish produce a thicker "slime coat" since the salt acts as an irritant to your fish. Having a thicker slime coat will give your fish some extra protection against any bacteria that is residing in your tank. The other thing you can do is add either some of API's Betafix or Melafix. They are the same natural med but the Betafix gives you doses that are for smaller tanks. I believe you add this to your tank for 7 days. It usually works especially for cases where the fish has been injured.

Hope this helps you if you ever get another Betta. Please, let me know if you ever have any other questions.
