Does anyone know if the bacteria in a fish tank is dangerous to pregnant women. I want to clean out my tank, but if it's dangerous to my baby I'll get my hubby to do it for me.

Being a medical person, I think I'm going to refer you back to your OB's office to be safe. I would call them and either ask the nurse or get her to ask your MD for you. Personally I wouldn't think it would be harmful since your fish are fine, BUT just to be sure call them first and see what they say. It's an interesting question. Maybe I'll do some research on that later and see what I find. I'll let you know if I find an answer. Your other option would be to get some long gloves if you have to stick your hands in the tank. Catboxes are an issue especially if you have outdoor cats, but I've never heard anything about fish tanks being a problem.

Congrats from one mommy to another!!!

One thing I found when I was doing some looking it that protazoans can be harmful if they are in your water. I would think, though, that if your fish are healthy it shouldn't be a problem. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap after you are done messing with your fish. Also, skin is a great barrier to all kinds of things, but if you have any cuts or wounds on your hands that WILL allow things to enter your body. If and when that happens, I would either let hubby do the water changes or wear what are called "Reef" gloves. They are long gloves that are specifically made for doing water changes in fish tanks. Again, though, ask the OB!

    Hope this helps!
