Default Don't Always Believe Pet Stores

Hi. I bought a new betta fish from Petco on Sun. (9/28/08). The fish was in a cup marked "Female Crowntail Betta". When I got my fish home, I took a closer look at it, did some research on the internet, and discovered it was actually a male crowntail betta! I kept him, because he was beautiful. But I had to separate him from my female betta. I called the manager at Petco and told him to have someone re-check the bettas to make sure they're marked correctly.
    Can you believe it?!

Hi. No, actually, I'm not looking to breed them. I had meant to buy two female fish. I've had males before, thought I'd change it up and get females. The one I bought from Petsmart, Chloe, actually is a female (I checked to be sure). But Petco really screwed up. In fact, I was afraid they'd spawn once I realized I had a male & female together, so I separated them. It seemed like the male was chasing the female before I separated them. He might've even ended up killing her if I hadn't intervened. The crowntail male, Neptune, is really handsome, so I kept him, instead of taking him back for a female. He's got a peach/pink face, blue body, and red fins. Chloe is blue, with orange stripes on her face and some orange mixed in her fins. Not sure what kind of betta she is, though.

No, I was actually looking for a female to go along with my other female. Imagine my surprise when I discovered what I brought home was a male! Thankfully, I didn't have them in the same tank together for longer than one day!

Be careful on with what the tell you regarding treatment for sick fish, too. It's always best to either come to this forum or do your own research first! Most pet store employees just have a general knowledge about fish but not much knowledge about specific fish and their best treatments. Sometimes their advice with tank setup is not always the best, either. At least you ended up with a beautiful boy Betta and gave one a good home!

Thanks, Fishmomma! Yeah, I think my new crowntail boy, Neptune, is beautiful. He's got a pink/peach face, blue body, and red fins. He's my first crowntail. The female, Chloe, is blue with orange stripes on her face and some orange mixed in her fins. Not sure what kind of betta she is, though. I sure hope the manager at Petco took my advice and had someone re-check their betta fish!
By the way, I bought a filter for my tank, like I said I would. My boy Costello ended up getting sucked up through the filter. He died a week later (on 9/28).
That's why I went and bought Neptune and Chloe. I hated the sight of an empty tank.

sorry to hear that about your betta . heres a link on a filter that wont suck up anything but small particles and water: [Registered users only can see links. ]
Thats definitly a big mistake on petco's part, being that they mostly put out adult males when they sell them. i purchase a couple from there and a couple of them are partly my breeding pair. like 3 out of the 10 are from there and have been breeding. And i definitly don't blame you not injoying the sight of an empty tank.... i probably wouldn't get any sleep over seeing that!!!!
