Well, it really depends on what you're looking for as a result! What about this male do you like and hope will be passed down? What sort of finnage do you want their offspring to have? Your boy's got some gorgeous colors; if you want to keep those, you'll have to find a girl with similar colors.
umm there really isn't a best match. It just depends on the kind of fish that you want their fry to be and whether or not he likes your picks some fish don't like fish of the same color as them and some only like fish of the same color. It just depends on who your boy and girl end up liking. Veiltail females are cheaper than others... In some kind of way that might make them a better match...
If you pick a veiltail female you will have 100% veil tail spawn. Pros: veil tails tend to be hardier than other types. Females more common and cheaper so it will be easier to find a good one.
If you pick a crown tail female, you will have 50%veil tail spawn 50% combtail. Cons: they do sell crown tail females, but they run almost twice as much as veils.
If you pick a delta/halfmoon female, you will have 100% veil tail spawn. Cons: in my experience deltas are less hardy. They are far more expensive, I have seen them priced at 6x the price of a veil tail female.
If you pick a plakat female, you will have 100% veil tail spawn. Cons: plakats are hard to find. Pros: just as hardy as veils, possibly more.
So hardiness is a relative term and individual fish vary, but that is the overall feel I have gotten from my experience with fish and things I have read. I would go with a veil tail.
As for color, I would go with a blue female if I were you. When mating a blue and a blue, you will have 25% Green, 50% Blue, 25% Steel Blue offspring (well that isn't definite, but that is what the genetics work out to be) which seems more fun to me because you get different things.
Here is a good site on genetics: [Registered users only can see links. ]
So yeah my vote is for a blue veiltail female

We got in 10. The barracks will only hold 12 and each one has to have his/her own space! We had 2 males, both of which came in with bacterial fin rot so they went to the hospital tank for treatment and recuperation. After a month, they're doing beautifully and they're ready for a new home. It really is more cost effective to cull them when they come in sick, but once here, I feel like they are in my care and it's my responsibility to at least try. These 2 should be sold for about $15 each to pay for their tx and care, but most important is that they're healthy now.
