do water changes. simple. dont do 100 percent water changes though.

    if its a 1/2 gallon - 2-3 days change.
    1 - 1.5 gallon- 3 days change.
    2 - 3 gallons - 4 or 5 days change
    4- 5 gallons every 5/6/7

    yes of course it helps.
curls are the result of bad water quality.

if you wish you could add salt (NOT THE SALT WE USE FOR THE KITCHEN). if u use it there is a less chance of getting all the bacteria and fungus things.

    been there, done that.

being that all information given above is good, but i have to highly recommend changing one. With not trying to offend anyone in this forum or any betta enthusiest. Water changing is a always a good idea but should be done Once a week. doing more can result in basically throwing away ALL beneificial bacteria that helps out the fishes health and there immune system. Depending on the size of the tank and how frequent you do it, i breed this little guys as a hobby and have been taught and experianced everything from individuals that work over seas in thailand at betta farms and hatcheries. A water change of 15% everyweek should be done, 20% at the most. I do this and make sure of it every sunday. And i haven't had any problems with my water and clarity. Buying "Water Conditioner" WILL help with the quality of tap water, and gets rid of all chlorine and harmful metals in our tap water that will harm your bettas and there health, even tho these things are somewhat beneficial to us. The size of your tank should be taken into consideration, being that if you own a 1gallon bowl/tank to a 2 gallon tank water change should be done every 4-5days IF NO FILTER IS PRESENT! ALSO the best thing to ensure water quality is to get a filter. [Registered users only can see links. ] The type of filter that should be considered is a intank spong filter. this is because this type does not create a current in which your betta always has to swim against the current to get to the other side. The natural habbitate bettas come from are mainly calm water with little or no current at all! What size tank do u have?

Check to see how hard your water is. If you have really hard (and not soft) water that can also cause tail curling in crowntails. General Hardness (GH) is what it is called when you measure it. You really want water that is less than 140ppm for Bettas. If it goes to GH 300-320ppm then that is considered hard. If it measures at GH 530ppm then that is really hard! Making the water softer is a bit tricky and you should do some researh on the issue before trying to do this. One thing that you can do that will help is getting some R/O water at the pet shop. (R/O means reverse osmosis.) I've seen this at our local pet shop in the water treatment suppy area by the fish tanks. If you have well water sometimes that can be very hard water as opposed to the city water that a lot of people have. Adding some peat moss sometimes helps the situation, too, although I don't know a specific amount to tell you. Usually they say to not mess with the GH unless you are having severe problems. The other thing you might try is buying bottled spring water (NOT DISTILLED) and mixing it half and half with the water conditioner. That may also help. You should be able to find a test kit that will test for GH at the pet store. If not this online store has them: [Registered users only can see links. ].

Hope this helps! Do be sure to do WEEKLY water changes. If you do water changes more than twice a week this only causes stress to your Betta. Also, NEVER do a 100% water change. You're only dumping all the beneficial bacteria down the drain when you do this. If you're trying to get the poo out of the gravel, purchase a gravel vaccum to do this, instead. Good luck!! Let me know if I can answer any other questions!
