New crowntail -- sick?

My new blue crowntail male betta had some spots on his tail and upper fin that were transparent. And also, he doesn't have many scales on his face and his face is white, unlike the rest of him. He also has a flap of black skin in his gills that moves when he breathes (I've never seen any other fish with gills like that). Are the transparent spots, his face, and gills okay, or is he sick?

Could you possibly post a picture? I'm not sure what you're talking about. Are there any other symptoms? Has he been acting odd in any way?

I have had goldfish that had parasites, like fish lice that were transparent-looking, I had to pick them off with tweezers. Also, the black thing in his gills could be another type of parasite, you may want to have a closer look at that before you try anything with tweezers due to the fragile nature of gills. You might want to try a parasite medication to see if that gets rid of the spots and the fleck in his gills. Sometimes fish come into the store carrying parasites and it goes unnoticed until they are sold. Hope this helps you to determine what is wrong with him.
