Personally i wouldnt add anymore cardinals. Just leave the one in. he'll be fine. As of right now your main concern is the whole tank and not just one. Even tho they do travel in schools, i have had a lone neon for months before giving it away. the same thing happened with yours but the one neon survived. You doing everything right in the tanks enviroment so i wouldn't worry, ITs usually survival of the fittest and in some cases this happens in our own tank. So personally i wouldn't experiment with your fishes/Bettas or your wallet, know what i mean. just see how everything plays out for the next week or so and then make a decision
