Is my fish happy?

I have a purple boy betta fish. I got him from pet co, where else. I did'nt know that I had to know so much about these little guys until I realized that he was not moving around, he only moved around alittle bit when he needs to! Q. #1, Do Beta Fish move around alot? I also looked at some of the pictures of Beta Fish and they seemed like their fins were spred out as if they where happy. Which brings me to- Q. #2 Is there something wrong if his fins are not spread out? I dont know if he is not getting enough heat; I read some where that they might need water heaters. Or is it that he is not getting enough sun light? I should probably state his condition:
Macho Nacho (My Fish) has:
~A toaster sized tank.(Is it too small, I also read somewhere that if it is a guy ((which he is)) then they might take it as a preditior. It is about a 1 gallonish tank Q. #3 Is the tank too small?)
~He usually dose not get alot of sun light, and the water is about a normal house temp.
~He has one plant, which he sleeps in some times, rocks and thats about it... Is he lonley? Q. #4
~I feed him regularly, when ever he takes what I put out for him
~No filter, or water heater
~I clean his tank about once every 1 and a half to 2 and a half weeks (depending on how dirty)
~I never put in any med.s, is that important?

Well, as you know I dont know alot about beta fish. So, what is wrong with him, if any thing at all? Please, Please help me....

i would get a heater jus raising the temp of the water makes a big difference my ct betta jus sat at the bottom of the tank ate and came up for air, i went out an got a heater and now he swims around find and his fins do flare even without a mirror its like he is showing me how beautiful he is, so yea definitely get a heater and a filter wouldnt be bad neither, it just keeps his water cleaner so that you don't have to change his water so often, and yes get water conditioner, liquid plant food that has chelated iron and a bacteria supplement but make sure that the water conditioner just gets rid of chlorine and not remove heavy metals because you would be killing ur plant if it's a live plant
