    Default Live Plants...

I was reading about live plants and it was saying that at during the day it takes in CO2 and gives off O2 (which is good) but at night this process reverses and that with a heavily planted tanks carbon dioxide levels can rise significantly, while the oxygen levels drop off. What is with this?

Yeah for your size tank you shouldn't worry about this. Oxigen gets trapped even in filtered water being thrown back in the tank, thus releasing it in the water. Don't worry about your bettas suffocating because it wont happen. as long and you got a feeding door open for air to circulate in the tank its fine! Good question tho i never thought of it like that and i have only 10 gallon tanks

FishyFriend, live plants are an added plus for aquariums. Yes, they do release oxygen (byproduct of photosynthesis during periods of light) into the water and the reverse takes place when there is no light (respiration, taking in O2 and releasing CO2), but the amount of O2 released is much greater than the CO2 released. Think of it this way, if all plants produced that much CO2 at night, we would all wake up the next morning with no O2 to breathe. . . This is very light and condensed info, but if you keep researching (check out photosynthesis) you will get a better understanding. Make sure you look at some university sites to get your info (look for credentials of websites) and you'll get more than enough. :-)

Good question! I never gave much thought about that but plants do give off both O2 and CO2. Bettalvr is right on in his answer, so thanks!!

I use real plants in all my tanks and have yet to end up with a dead Betta in the morning from them! Real plants are, by far, the best!!

Hey all I tell ya the whole Bettaologist title is becoming closer and closer to reality with these type of questions and answers. Great stuff everyone. I personally use only live plants so I think I will credit this info towards my Bettaologist credentials
