What's really needed?

I recently bought 2 Bettas a female and a male and had a few questions when it comes to their housing. Right now I just have them in 2 seperate dishes but would really like to get them something bigger. So I was thinking of getting a 10 gallon for them. My questions are what type of filtration do I need for them and if I keep them together will they automaticly make babies? It's been too long since I've studied up on it to remember. Or is there a way to divide the tank? Or do you think 2 seperate 1 gallon tank things would be enough? I'm going to have a hard enough time convincing my husband that they need more room. He always gives in though. I'm also somewhat limited on counter space but can always make alittle bit more room.

A divided 10 gallon tank would be splendid. If they were together, yeah they could make babies, but it's more likely that they'd kill each other. Any filtration would work, just not anything with too strong a current. They sell cheap dividers at any pet store.
