How to make aquarium for a betta fish?

I have a betta fish that I got from a pet store. It is still in the little plastic container that I bought it in. I don't know how to make an aquarium for it. I have a floral vase that I would like to use, but I'm afraid that it is dirty. Should I wash it with soap, or could that hurt the fish? Do betta fish need gravel? How high should the water be? Also, how much should I feed my betta fish every day?

A vase is a bit small. Buy him a bowl or a kritter keeper. Soap shouldn't be sued with fish, it's toxic for them. They don't need gravel, but it adds atmosphere. Water shouldn't be more than a foot high, as bettas swim to the surface to breathe. Just feed your betta a few flakes or pellets twice a day and he'll be fine.

Don't use soap...that would hurt the fish. And you need a larger container than the vase. My betta is in a 6 gallon tank with some plants and he likes it a lot. I started with a 2 gallon glass bowl and he was ok...but he's much happier now. I have a picture of him on my profile.
